Helpful hints for the self employed

Business turnover

"Turnover" means the amount your business earns before you deduct any business expenses. It is income of any kind - for goods you have sold or services you have supplied.

— Fees/payment received
— Tips
— Payment in kind
— Commission
— Proceeds from an insurance pay out, eg. for loss or damage to stock or loss of profits

Allowable Business Expenditure

You can deduct the costs you incur solely for the purpose of running your business.

— Goods bought for resale.
— Wages/salaries.
— Rent and other overheads of any premises you have for your business.
— Stationery, printing, advertising, telephone.
— The cost of running any vehicles used in your business.
— Protective clothing.
— Interest on a loan which is taken out for business purposes (only the interest)
— Repairing of any equipment.

Purchase of equipment

The cost of the purchase is not an allowable expence, although you can claim Capital Allowances

Capital Allowances spread the cost of buying equipment over a period of years. For example if you use a van for your business, you can claim Capital Allowances on the value of your van.
